Forging inspection and supplier quality
Forgings are chosen for strength and reliability. We verify that the properties you pay for are achieved and documented.
01Strength depends on the process route
Forging quality depends on the starting material, reduction ratio, forging temperature, heat treatment and the absence of internal defects such as laps, bursts and flakes. Properties must be demonstrated with test pieces representative of the forging, which is where many disputes start.
QUALITAS TR audits forging suppliers, witnesses heat treatment and mechanical testing, reviews ultrasonic testing and verifies dimensions and documentation. For safety relevant forgings we follow traceability from billet to finished part.
02Typical quality risks we see
- Laps, folds and surface cracks
- Internal bursts or hydrogen flakes
- Incorrect heat treatment and hardness
- Test pieces not representative of the forging
- Insufficient reduction ratio
- Decarburisation
- Dimensional mismatch between die halves
03How QUALITAS TR supports forging buyers
| Service | What we do in this sector |
|---|---|
| Material Verification and Certificate Review | Billet certificates, heat traceability and final properties verified. |
| NDT Coordination and Witnessing | UT procedure and calibration review, MT on finished surfaces. |
| Laboratory Testing Coordination | Independent tensile, impact and hardness testing on prolongations. |
| Manufacturing and Special Process Audits | Heating, forging and heat treatment process audits. |
| Dimensional and Geometrical Inspection | As-forged and machined dimensional verification. |
04Key inspection points
- Starting material certificates and heat numbers
- Forging temperature control
- Heat treatment furnace charts
- Hardness distribution
- Test piece location and identification
- UT coverage and recording levels
- MT for surface defects
- Dimensional checks and die mismatch
05Standards and requirements
Forging steels and their properties are specified in standards such as EN 10250, EN 10222 for pressure purposes and ASTM A105 or A182 for flanges and fittings. UT of forgings commonly follows EN 10228-3 or ASTM A388.
06The sector in Turkey
Turkish forging companies supply automotive, defence, rail, oil and gas and general engineering markets, many with integrated machining and heat treatment.
Forging clusters are found in the Marmara region, Ankara and central Anatolia.
