Materials, geometry and pressure
PED 2014/68/EU: Pressure Equipment Directive
The EU legal framework for placing pressure equipment on the market. Turkey applies an equivalent regulation.
01Purpose
The Pressure Equipment Directive harmonises requirements for the design, manufacture and conformity assessment of pressure equipment and assemblies with a maximum allowable pressure greater than 0.5 bar.
02Scope
Equipment is classified into categories I to IV according to pressure, volume or nominal size and fluid group; the category determines the conformity assessment modules. Equipment below the thresholds falls under sound engineering practice.
03Main requirements
- Essential safety requirements in Annex I
- Classification by hazard category
- Conformity assessment modules, with notified body involvement for higher categories
- Approval of joining procedures and personnel, and NDT personnel, for higher categories
- Material requirements and inspection documents
- Technical documentation, EU declaration of conformity and CE marking
04Typical applications and industries
Vessels, piping, safety accessories and pressure accessories placed on the EU market. Harmonised standards such as EN 13445 and EN 13480 give presumption of conformity.
05Audit and inspection considerations
- Is the category and module correctly determined?
- Is the notified body involved where required?
- Are material documents compliant?
06Common nonconformities
- Wrong category assignment
- Joining procedures not approved by the required body
- Missing declaration of conformity
07How QUALITAS TR can support
QUALITAS TR acts as the buyer's inspector, not as a notified body. See pressure equipment inspection.
